Tourette's Syndrome and Learning Disorders

Abstract

Twenty-one children [ages 6 years, 8 months to 15 years, 11 months (mean age 11 years,5 months)] with Tourette's syndrome, who were subjects of a larger study of Tourette's syndrome, completed an educational battery including the achievement test of the Woodcock-Johnson Psychoeducational Battery-Revised, the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised, and a battery of neuropsychological processing tests to detennine the prevalence of learning disorders, the areas of academic difficulty, and the spectrum of Central Nervous System processing defects. Spelling and writing were significant problems in 75% ofthis sample, 50% had difficulty with calculations, and 25% had difficulty with word identification and reading comprehension. Visual-motor defects, stemming from varied causes, were prominent.
