Abstract

Anxiety in children with learning disorders may stem from many causes. In children with specific learning disabilities, their stimulus barrier cannot cope with the perceptual and conceptual distortions caused by their specific central nervous system processing problems. In children with structural (organic) central nervous system defects and in those with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorders, their stimulus barrier is so attenuated that it is overwhelmed by external stimuli and by the task of modulating internal drives. And, in some children the balance between the child's needs and the ability of the environment to meet those needs is disturbed. In each case, stimuli are not appropriately modulated and anxiety ensues. A comprehensive examination ofeach child is needed to determine the source of the anxiety and to offer appropriate management.
