Abstract

Many high schools across Virginia participate in the Medford High School Basketball League. The league is comprised of high school students with disabilities who compete against each other high schools in a fun, low-pressure games. Students wear uniforms or t-shirts displaying their school’s name, and referees make sure the game flows smoothly without calling many violations or fouls. Coaches may go onto the court as needed to support their players. Often, students without disabilities are released from classes to fill the stand in their gymnasiums and cheer on their classmates. This paper introduces the Medford League, history of development, game play logistics and rules, and the benefits to players and the broader high school community. The paper concludes with a case study of one regional Medford League in Central Virginia.
