An Introduction to Wheelchair Tennis for Future Athletes and Coaches

Abstract

Wheelchair tennis is one of the fastest growing adapted sports in the world. This article serves as an introduction to this sport for prospective and novice wheelchair tennis athletes, as well as future coaches. A brief outline of the history of wheelchair tennis and its athlete classification system along with an overview of the rules as they are different from whole body tennis is provided. Wheelchair tennis equipment, special strategic and technical considerations, and the mental, social, and physiological benefits of wheelchair tennis participation are discussed. Lastly, important societal and safety issues surrounding wheelchair tennis are addressed.
