Abstract

Despite the benefits, most special populations are not meeting the recommended physical activity guidelines placing individuals at greater risk for secondary conditions. In order to facilitate the adoption and maintenance of physical activity across the lifespan, determinants of activity should be evaluated across interventions and programs. Self-efficacy, confidence one has in their ability to perform a behavior, is a contributing factor to being active. This overview aims to describe the current state of physical activity and self-efficacy literature, identify the sources of self-efficacy applicable to specific populations, and provide practical suggestions to increase physical activity of persons with disabilities across the lifespan.
