Abstract

The aquatic programs addressed in this article summarize the results of the Performance Improvement Study conducted for the U.S. Army Office of the Surgeon General and specifically the Proponency Office for Rehabilitation and Reintegration. The goal of the study was to collect data to develop an aquatic program and provide standardization of aquatic rehabilitation and aquatic exercise programs across the Army for Soldiers with musculoskeletal injuries. Two distinct programs were developed: Aquatic Rehabilitation of Wounded Warriors for those under the care of therapists in the Medical Treatment Facility, and Aquatic Exercise Program for Soldiers in Wounded Warrior Units and led by noncommissioned officers in the Wounded Warrior Units. Study results, as well as goals and implementation of these programs, are presented.

Historically, aquatic programming and services for individuals with disabilities have resulted from defined needs of aquatic services to individuals with disabilities as a result of military service. These aquatic programs are being implemented across the United States. They will no doubt prove to be valuable examples for aquatic programming for all individuals with disabilities.
