Abstract

How much impairment-specific knowledge do you need to

coach an athlete with a disability? Generally speaking, there

seems to be two schools of thought. On the one hand, there

are those people who think that it is not necessary to have

any knowledge of impairment to coach an athlete with a

disability. And others say you must have knowledge about

impairment to coach an athlete with a disability. Our goal

in this article is to help the reader think about the issue of

impairment-specific knowledge and coaching. Included will

be the relationship between the level of athlete impairment

and the required knowledge a coach may need to coach that

athlete.
