Abstract

This article provides guidelines aimed at fostering positive teacher-parent relationships. It discusses recent legislative mandates, how parent-teacher relationships are affected by current policy issues promoted by professional education organizations, and methods of constructive communication to foster interaction between parents and teachers. Family involvement in the school should be proactive, rather than reactive. Parents and teachers of students with learning disabilities should recognize their rights and legal obligations, understand pupils from both the home and school perspective, and work together to ensure that students' educational programs are appropriate to meet their needs. The education of the child needs to be a joint venture with a collegial relationship between parents and teachers.
